The project Revival of City Squares in Balkan Cities was implemented during 2011-2012 The project aimed to contribute to the revival of city squares as viable public places that foster cultural identity and promote diversity through enforcement of public policies and active community participation. The project lead partner was organization Co-PLAN, Institute for Habitat Development from Tirana, Albania; while the project partners were: Coalition for Sustainable Development KOR from Skopje, Macedonia; EXPEDITIO from Kotor, Montenegro and Polis University (International School of Architecture and Urban Development Policies) from Tirana, Albania.

A database of organisations and actors dealing with issues related to public spaces in the Balkan/ SEE region has been created within the project “Revival of City Squares in Balkan Cities”. The project uses participative approaches and partnerships to build on the already reached achievements in Balkan/ SEE region and to secure active involvement of all relevant stakeholders. Different civil society organizations and other actors give considerable contribution to addressing public spaces issues. There are numerous projects and initiatives all around the Balkan/ SEE region treating issues in this field. The database aims to present, in one place, various organisations and actors dealing with issues related to public spaces in the Balkan/ SEE region.
The Final Conference of the project is scheduled to be held in October 2012 within the first Tirana Architecture Week. It will be a big closing event foreseeing to host an International exhibition of Contemporary Art inspired by the idea of Public Square and four site-specific artworks created by two artists from different areas of the Balkan Region. Furthermore, the conference is organized in order to discuss the activities and results of the project and, moreover, to open a discussion on how to re-consider the idea of Public Square in the Balkans Cities so that the squares can be transformed into new crucial spaces for the city life.

Within the project “Revival of City Squares in Balkan Cities”, Expeditio initiated and organized a meeting with the Manager of the Municipality of Kotor, Srdjan Dragomanović. During the meeting, held on 14 December 2011, the Manager was acquainted with the project, its implemented activities and further plans.
The meeting of counterparts of the project “Revival of Town Squares of the Balkan Towns” was held in Skoplje on 11 and 12 November 2011. The meeting was attended by the representatives of the counterpart non-governmental organisations which implement the Project: Co-PLAN and Polis University from Tirana, EXPEDITIO from Kotor, as well as the host of the meeting – Coalition for Sustainable Development from Skoplje. The meeting was also attended by the representative of the project donor Swiss Cultural Programme in the Western Balkans (SCP).
A meeting of the partners implementing the project “Revival of City Squares in Balkan Cities” was held in Kotor on 2 November 2012. The meeting, hosted by EXPEDITIO, was attended by representatives of the partner organizations Co-PLAN and Polis University from Tirana, Albania, the Coalition for Sustainable Development (KOR) from Skopje, Macedonia and EXPEDITIO from Kotor. A representative of the donor, the Swiss Cultural Programme in the Western Balkans (SCP), was also present at the meeting.
