Completing a QUESTIONNAIRE about cultural heritage of the Prokletije area

We would like to ask all of you who live in the Prokletije area or you who know, visit or love this area to help us by completing a QUESTIONNAIRE on cultural heritage of the area.

The questionnaire is part of the "Assessment of Cultural Heritage in the Prokletije Area " conducted by EXPEDITIO. EXPEDITIO was commissioned by SNV – the Natherlands Development Organisation to conduct the assessment in the period September-December 2009 . The assessment is implemented within the project "Protection and enhancement of rural communities and their traditional landscape by strengthening environmental management in the trans-boundary protected areas of the Dinaric mountain range" which is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland and implemented by IUCN, WWF and SNV. In the Registry of Cultural Monuments of Montenegro, only six protected monuments from the territory of Prokletije are listed! However, there is no doubt that this area possesses many valuable cultural assets that have not yet been officially identified.

We want to emphasize that the cultural heritage includes immovable, i.e. architectural heritage (houses, churches, mosques, bridges, villages, “katuns” /summer pasture settlements/ ...), movable heritage (works of art, everyday objects, furniture ...), as well as intangible heritage (customs, music, crafts ...) and finally the entire culture landscape which encompasses all these elements.

A participatory approach used in the preparation of the assessment has already been used in many fields but it is new in the field of cultural heritage in our area and it implies the inclusion of all stakeholders in the process of heritage identification and recognition of its potential.

Therefore, it is very important to us to hear your opinion, that you tell us what you think are the most valuable segments of the cultural heritage of the Prokletije area and what is your vision regarding the future of that heritage, its protection and development.

Your opinion is very important to us and we hope that the completing of the questionnaire will not take away a lot of your time.

to consider sending them to us because they will greatly assist us in our work. We will respect all copyright and ownership laws.

We would especially like to ask hikers if they have photographs from their hiking tours in which elements of cultural landscapes, particularly in higher altitudes, can be seen (“katuns”, old roads, stone fences, etc.).
