Architectural workshop and action "Izlaz za Zalaze" is organized in the framework of the project entitled "Evaluation of the rural heritage in Montenegro - pilot area Zalazi", which is funded by the Hedley Trust Foundation and whose goal is to improve the protection and valorisation of rural heritage in Montenegro.
Although the rural heritage of Montenegro in the best way reflects excellent Montenegro areas values and although it is very important and diverse, it, unfortunately, has not yet been adequately treated and protected. The value and potential of rural heritage and authentic cultural landscape in Montenegro are still not sufficiently recognized. On the official List of protected cultural properties it is registered only one village and a couple of individual objects that have a memorial character. This legacy is now at great risk: on the one hand, due to collapse of a large number of abandoned villages, and on the other hand, due to the extremely rapid and uncontrolled urbanization that destroys much of the valuable rural heritage and landscape.
The project "Evaluation of Rural Heritage in Montenegro" goal is to raise awareness of the value and importance of rural heritage in Montenegro as well as the creation of the model - the methodology for the study, the identification and evaluation of the rural heritage and on the basis of specific activities in the villages of Zalazi.
Zalazi are the pilot area which is processed within project "Evaluation of Rural Heritage in Montenegro". Zalazi are a series of four villages located in the mountains that surround the Bay of Kotor. Area is located in the buffer zone of Cultural- historical and natural Region of Kotor subscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List , and close to the National Park Lovcen. Villages are now abandoned and are not protected at the national level , though they have value and potential for evaluation. the Potential of this region is already recognized especially in relation with the new tourism sectors, such as hiking, climbing, rural and eco tourism.
The aim of the architectural workshop is to explore and map the rural heritage of the Zalazi region, and to give the example of the possible models of care and evaluation of rural heritage in general, through: research, mapping, recording, collecting documentation, analysis, defining guidelines, presentation and promotion.
Workshop participants will be students of architecture and architects from Montenegro, Serbia and France.
Action "Izlaz za Zalaze" will be organized on Sunday, September 29th, 2013. This event is open to all who are interested in contributing to the preservation of village and willing to be engaged in a discussion regarding the value and future of these villages .
In the framework of the action "Izlaz za Zalaze" is planned for participants to be symbolically involved in the process of preserving Zalaza and present to the village of Mali Zalazi one tile ("crucible") to maintain one of the few covered houses, which is a gathering place for hikers. Those who are interested will be able to get involved and help with architectural recording of facilities in the village, planting pine seedlings or food preparation. Also, all participants are invited to engage in a discussion that will be organized on the threshing floor in Malim Zalazima and through which to review the value and potential of hinterland villages and give a vision of development.
