Feminist mapping of towns (prepared by Gordana Stojakovic, workshop moderator and lecturer)

I Lecture: the aims of research and models of women’s history presentation based on the examples from Novi Sad, Kikinda and Belgrade.

II Workshop: who are important women, methodology of research (material, sources and literature, expected results), how to write women’s biographies (the contents), how to make citations, guidelines for the preparation of texts (summary, main text, conclusions, annexes, rules on how to state the cited literature, photographs), authors’ rights.

The aim of the workshop and lecture is to research and make visible the women’s spaces in the history and culture of our urban spaces. The stories about historical and cultural development of towns, about institutions, buildings, economy development, squares and streets can be and should be told though the stories about women who contributed to the cultural, scientific and economic history, who lived at the second half of the 19th century or beginning of the 20th century.  That is equally legitimate history as the one written in textbooks. Only it has been suppressed because it is the story of cooperation and tolerance that makes the foundation of women’s history.

Models of feminist mapping of towns are one of the models that should offer a response to the question of women’s position in our history and culture and in the spaces within which our lives unfold. A model of feminist mapping of towns always contains a thorough research using a scientific apparatus, as well as diverse and synchronized uses of the feminist knowledge of towns. This is achieved through research on our women predecessors, their biographies and spaces in which they lived and worked and, above all, through becoming aware of the previous experiences that took part in shaping our lives though we may not be conscious of them.
